The Cantillon and Houck families of Cleveland began vacationing at Put-in-Bay in the days when the Steamers tied up at Fox's Dock, now home of the Jet Express. When Dan Cantillon married Genevieve Houck they, too, continued to vacation at Put-in-Bay with their growing family of nine children. In the 1950's Dan wrote a poem titled "South Bass" and forwarded it to his long-time friend and summer cottager, George McMonagle.
In that poem, Dan compared Put-in-Bay to the famous and more up-scale island in New England-Nantucket. He called the Put-in-Bay of the fifties, "Poor Man's Nantucket," and when Dan's son, Bill, bought their house on Put-in-Bay, he named it "Cantillon's Poor Man's Nantucket".
This generation of Cantillons enjoys the opportunity to offer a summer retreat to other families who love the island as much as they do.
